- Born in Chicago in the 1960's, Janet Thompson was a child of Motown and popular culture. Begriming around age 10 Janet started to develop an awareness of the energy of those around her. Over time, she found she could tap into this energy to some small benefit, allowing her to excel in sports, especially track and field, and later boxing. By the ago of 20 Janet had even mastered the ability to control and even forcibly steal energy from those around her, and use it to further power her own athletic abilities. Beyond athletics, Janet had little thought for her powers until her younger brother was killed in a spree of violent muggings. Swearing to avenge him, she frequented the streets at night, as an apparent victim. After several days, when she was finally held up by a pack of armed hoodlums, she tapped her powers and used their own energy against them to defeat them; she delivered their unconscious bodies to the police the next morning. Realizing there was a greater destiny out there for her, she took the Alias Funktacular and because a vigilante of Chicago. After the Rikti invasion and following destruction of Paragon City, Funktacular relocated to better serve those in greatest need.
